What is Threads?

On July 5, 2023, Meta Platforms launched their new social media platform, Threads, which serves as a platform for users to post text-based content up to 500 characters, as well as allowing users to like, comment on, share, and repost on other “threads”. The platform opened with a huge splash, surpassing 100 million users within a week of launching.

Threads seems to be in direct competition with Twitter, as the two share the same primary use and features, as well as visual similarities. However, while the two are being heavily compared to each other, Threads lacks many of the features that are essential to the user experience on Twitter, some of which include direct messaging, a trending page, and the ability to search for posts rather than just users. Even without these key features, the launch of Threads caused Twitter’s engagement to trail off a bit. (www.cnbc.com)

Getting Started on Threads

In order to create an account on Threads, users must download the app and connect their own Instagram account to a new Threads account. Threads is currently only available for mobile use and cannot be used through the Instagram app, even though one account cannot exist without the other. Through the linked accounts, Threads gives the user the option to follow all or some of their current followers from Instagram on the new platform during the setup process. After the creation of the account, users can simply click the “New Thread” icon to share a post on their feed and profile page.

Threads for Business and Branding

Due to the large user base Threads has amassed over its first month, the platform could prove to be an essential tool in social media marketing for many businesses. While Threads does not yet allow for monetization or the purchase of advertising space, Meta is planning on releasing branded content tools for Threads in the near future (axios.com). Even without clear-cut tools, businesses can take advantage of the new space as an opportunity for brand growth and  new opportunities for client discovery. For those who are already familiar with and creating content for their Twitter accounts, leveraging the possibilities of the new platform should not be a challenge, as content created for either platform can be used interchangeably between the two.

The Future of Threads

Since its launch in July 2023, as well as its unprecedented early growth, the app’s new user sign-ups and engagement have been on the decline, but still show promise, especially in light of the Twitter rebrand. As it is still in its infancy, there is no way of predicting Threads future in the current social media landscape.
